    Dentist ends 51-year career  Apr 18, 2006
    Bass found himself in school for dentistry after the president of West Virginia State College saw him cleaning in front of the school's administration building and called the biology major in for a meeting. The president then directed Bass, who was thinking of becoming a teacher, into the dentistry program at Howard University, where Bass earned his doctorate in dental surgery in 1948. (Herald Sun)

    Activist preacher Gilmer is dead  Mar 4, 2006
    After the Navy, he began preaching, studied mechanical arts on the GI Bill at West Virginia State College, then became a master plumber. He started working in the fire departments Fire Prevention Bureau so he could be off Sundays to preach. (Charleston Gazette, WV -- News)
