    He was the younger of two sons, and was educated at Laurelwood Academy in Laurelwood, and Walla Walla College in Walla Walla, Wash. He intended to become a writer, but World War II made him a naval pilot, and he was part of the U.S. Naval Ferry Command, delivering aircraft throughout the United States during the war.     Graduating with a degree in music education from Walla Walla College in Washington state, she then headed to Alaska where she spent the next 10 years.
