After a long and distinguished career at OSU, he moved to Portland to teach printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Upon his retirement, Gilkey established the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts at the Portland Art Museum. (Albany Democrat-Herald, OR)

After graduation, Hocking studied graphic design at the Pacific Northwest College of Art ("It was pre-computer," she noted) but loved drawing. Her career and raising two daughters had taken Hocking away from her art, but she still loved the idea of starting with nothing and ending with a visual story that often develops its own personality.
