McQuien, a Fort Meade native, graduated from Harrison Center for the Performing Arts in Lakeland, then received his B.A. in illustration and painting from Memphis College of Art. He also attended the Art Institute of Chicago (1999), and Ringling College of Art and Design (2003) on a mobility scholarship. (The Fort Meade Leader, FL)

Painter and illustrator Jeanne Seagle, a Memphis College of Art graduate and a Fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia, brought the characters of this story to life. Seagle has illustrated a number of children's books and some of her work is featured in a special collection at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts.
