Born Aug. 6, 1917, at Clovis, N.M., a son of the late Mable Thomas Bell and George Hugh Bell, Bell grew up at Little Rock and attended Little Rock Central High School and John Brown University. Bell met and married the former Doris Jean Reichenbach in 1944 and was soon after shipped out to the Philippines to serve in the Army during World War II.
