    This new name was particularly fitting because Nathaniel Hawthorne and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were contemporaries (members of the Bowdoin College class of 1825) who became close friends during their professional lives. Longfellow Road, although originally intended as a renaming of Hawthorne Avenue Extension, came to be applied to a former section of Hawthorne Avenue on the opposite site of Highland Avenue, ending at its junction with Mount Vernon Street.
